ENGAGE, EDUCATE, EMPOWER, PEOPLE TO ENHANCE SAFETY.

Hello readers! It has been a long time since I had last written a blog. If my memory serves me right, it is almost 2 years. Whatever may be the reasons I give will be nothing but excuses. I decided it was high time to stay away and not spread the knowledge I have, to the society.

The title ‘Engage, Educate, Empower, for people to enhance safety’ is the theme for the National Safety Day in India which falls on the 4th of March. In one of the organizations where I have been conducting trainings, I noticed a statement in bold. It said, ‘YOU ARE THE BEST GIFT FOR YOUR FAMILY.’ It is 100% true. The responsibility to remain safe is our first and foremost priority. But how to do it ourselves and keep others safe is a huge question mark.

Today there is so much going on around the world creating loss of life. Wars, accidents, natural disasters and what have not added to the uncertain lives. Jaggie and Maggie, our most loved characters discuss on the theme. Let us listen to them once again.

Jaggy: “Hello Maggie!”

Maggie: “Hi Jaggy, it has been a long time since we met. Trust everything is fine.”

Jaggy: “Yes Maggi, everything is going great.”

Maggie: “Good to hear. This time, the safety day theme is quite interesting.”

Jaggy: “Correct. It says Engage, Educate, Empower, people to enhance Safety. It is a profound statement.”

Maggie: “Of course, it is profound but how does one do it?”

Jaggy: “Safety is something many talk about but follow at their own convenience. Not only in the workplace, but everywhere. We always have an attitude of nothing will happen to me.”

Maggie: “How would you correct that?”

Jaggy: “First, rather than Educate I will Engage them. Engaging does not mean organizing seminars, webinars, or something like that. Engaging involves discussions, taking responsibility and accountability. It is simply not easy.”

Maggie: “You are right but how to do it?”

Jaggy: “As in life everyone needs a WHY to achieve their goals. Here too, we tell them WHY safety is important than everything else. When the Why is clear everyone would be willing to follow. It is important to engage the people on activities to explain the Why?”

Maggie: “Even then there are people who will not engage.”

Jaggy: “Yes, in the end they will come to understand looking at the others who have changed once they have understood the why.”

Maggie: “Oh, I see!”

Jaggy: “The next step is to educate by conducting training sessions on a lot of safety topics. This part is usually being done in all types of workplaces.”

Maggie: “In my office too, they are done but hardly a few ever attend.”

Jaggy: “This is an eternal problem. The attitude is that it is not for me. Once people realize through an experience, they would willingly attend. For people like us as Safety trainers, the way in which we deliver creates the need to attend.”

Maggie: “Then what about empowering people?”

Jaggy: “This is the action part. People should not only talk but put it in action. Safety Leadership is all about visible commitment. Where there are commitment and visibility, people are empowered.”

Maggie: “Same old Jaggy, never giving a straight answer.”

Jaggy: “It is simple Maggie. Communicate and remind people that they are free to report incidents and accidents. Any violation they observe, has to be reported. They should be given clear instructions to report without fear or bias when they see an unsafe act. Have a culture for rewarding people who report violations.”

Maggie: “What about the offender? Do we punish them?”

Jaggy:” Not for every violation. Some can be corrected by discussing things outright when noticed. They can be corrected with a clear system of information regarding violations. Even people can be rewarded if they correct themselves after violation. When done with the right intention and emotion, people tend to learn.”

Maggie: “Can we use the latest technology to do this?”

Jaggy: “100%. Technology today has improved by leaps and bounds, and it can be used to remind people how to be safe. Because humans need reminding.”

Maggie:” Any last words before you conclude Jaggy?”

Jaggy: “I would say that Safety Thoughts lead to Safety words. Safety Words lead to Safety action. Safety action leads to Safety practice. Safety practice leads to a Safety culture. Have a great Safety week and month Maggie.”

Maggie: “You too Jaggy. Stay Safe and healthy.”

To conclude, I can only say that when we keep safety as the uppermost thing in mind, we can always live a better life. Safety not only physically and mentally but also in the cyber space which has become a part and parcel of our life. The more and more we sweat in peace, the less and less we bleed in war. Take care.

MY INDIA- SAFE INDIA I.

A HAPPY 75TH INDEPENDENCE DAY TO ALL MY READERS FROM INDIA AND ACROSS THE WORLD.

Independence brings upon us great glory but at the same time, increases responsibility in whatever we do. We have the power in us to reach great heights. The heights reached by independent India have been well documented and known to the entire world. The strides we have made as a Nation are enormous and made us the talk of the world. Euphoria of celebration is in the air all over the country and let us all soak in the moment. India takes pride in how far we have come as a country and Indians have incredible faith in how far we can go. Let us take India to unimaginable heights by just doing a bit more than what we do. But to achieve all this, Safety is paramount. I have been doing my bit for the past 3 years writing on First Aid, Fire Fighting and Rescue, Motivation. As I enter into my 4th year of blogs, I thank each and every one of you for the unstinted support. More than the praise, it was the critical feedback which has helped me improve.

Jaggy and Maggie have created a lot of awareness on various aspects of first aid through their conversations. Most of the readers believe that they should have a lot of conversations. In a fresh series of conversations, they will be discussing a lot of aspects on Safety. Safety is ever evolving and this is my attempt to make India and the world as a whole, a safer place to live in.

Over to Jaggy and Maggie.

Maggie: “HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, JAGGY!”

Jaggy: “Yes. HAPPY 75TH INDEPENDENCE DAY TO YOU TOO!”

Maggie: “75 years and we have grown so much, is it not?”

Jaggy: “We have grown to a large extent and the world knows it.”

Maggie: “We are indeed a great country, Jaggy and I am proud of that.”

Jaggy: “Me too, Maggie, at the same time I want to make it a Safe Country, too.”

“Maggie: Are we not safe in the country? What do you mean?”

Jaggy: “My meaning of a Safe country is to minimize loss of life and injuries everywhere across the country.”

Maggie: “Everywhere?

Jaggy: “Yes, ‘everywhere’ meaning home, work place, roads, travel, occupational, behaviour, leadership and health.”

Maggie: “I get it, but I have a question. What is Safety?”

Jaggy: “Safety is everything. It is a Culture, which when implemented and imbibed, makes life a lot easier.”

Maggie: “Please explain in simple terms. I don’t want your philosophy.”

Jaggy: “Safety is an easy ABC. Always Be Careful.

Maggie: “How can we be careful at all times? Is it practically possible?”

Jaggy: “Not every time but most of the time.”

Maggie: “How can we be careful at all times?”

Jaggy: “By taking responsibility.

Maggie: “How?”

Jaggy: “Your first responsibility is towards yourself to not get injured. Second responsibility is towards your family. When we are injured, they suffer. Third responsibility is towards your organization and for the people whom you work with. Fourth, it is for the country and your countrymen.”

Maggie: “You mean to say Safety is the responsibility of every one.”

Jaggy: “Without a doubt.”

Maggie: “Can you give me more clarity on this.”

Jaggy: “Let me tell you a story. In a school, a girl was studying in the primary class. She used to be good in studies, sharp at grasping and excelled in whatever she did. Yet the teacher was perturbed.”

Maggie: “Why?”

Jaggy: “The girl though outstanding in the class was very shabby in appearance. Badly dressed, poor hygiene. The teacher used to wonder what is wrong with the kid till one fine day she took action.”

Maggie: “What action did she take?”

Jaggy: “She followed the girl to her home. While following her, she came to know that this girl came from a place which was filthy and dirty. The less said about the home of the girl and the parents. This shocked the teacher but also spurred her into action. One fine day, she took the girl home, bathed her, dressed her in new clothes and sent her home.”

Maggie: “Wow!”

Jaggy: “On seeing the girl come home dressed and looking beautiful, the parents even wondered whether it was their child. Realisation sank in. They looked at themselves in the mirror and their house. They immediately cleaned themselves, the house and also painted it with whatever minimum resources available. Seeing one house clean and painted, all the residents cleaned their homes, the streets and the area. In just a short time, from a filthy dirty area, it became the most beautiful area in the town.”

Maggie: “All because of one teacher taking up responsibility.”

Jaggy: “With Freedom comes great responsibility, and when all of us take it up, can we not make our country great but safe too?”

Maggie: “What else do we need to do to be careful?”

Jaggy: “Avoid unsafe acts and unsafe conditions.”

Maggie: “What?”

Jaggy: “Will tell more about it soon. Enjoy the extended Independence Day week end safely.”

Maggie: “You too.”

Jaggy: “Jai Hind.

Maggie: “Jai Hind.”

The Indian Armed Forces say THE MORE WE SWEAT IN PEACE, THE LESS WE BLEED IN WAR. When all of us make Safety a responsibility, India can be great and safe.

Automated External Defibrillator

LIVE LIFE SAVE LIFE – AED

Thanks to all the readers who have appreciated my last blog, Live Life Save Life where the characters Maggie and Jaggy discussed what to do in a Cardiac Arrest. The feed back received has only spurred me to continue to write better as it has increased the expectations of the readers. In this blog too Maggie and Jaggy will discuss more on Saving lives. Let us follow the conversation.

Maggie: “Hello Jaggy. You are looking great and in good health”.

Jaggy: “Yes, Maggie all is well with me looking forward to live life save life”.

Maggie: “Thank you for the conversation where you had explained the difference between Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest and the first aid to be done”.

Jaggy: “Teaching skills that saves life is always a pleasure”.

Maggie: “Last time you had explained 2 steps of the Chain of Survival and particularly CPR. Can you explain more on the 3rd step the defibrillation”?

Jaggy: “Sure Maggie. In CPR by we are only circulating oxygenated blood to the brain and thereby we can save life, but every time CPR alone cannot do the job. The heart is to be jolted with a bit of electric current to get back to its normal rhythm”.

Maggie: “You mean we need to give an Electric shock? Can a first aider do that”!

Jaggy: “This is not something new Maggie. This technique has been around for a long time. Doctors and health care workers use it every day to save lives”.

Maggie: “Doctors always save lives, but can you explain more clearly”?

Jaggy: “In many a movie we have seen doctors performing a surgery on someone. Suddenly you see the monitor go erratic and the doctor shouts Cardiac Arrest!!! Immediately the doctor is handed over two small square shaped boxes to which gel is applied and the doctor uses them on the chest of the patient. Miraculously the person is revived”.

Maggie: “I have seen that, but movies are movies. Never real”.

Jaggy: “I know but not everything in a movie is fantasy. The doctor in the movie uses a device called a Defibrillator.  Defibrillator is a device which jolts the heart into a normal rhythm. The doctors use a Manual Defibrillator wherein they decide the amount of shock to be given. First aider is not a doctor. So, they use an AED. Automated External Defibrillator”.

Maggie: “Wow! Interesting. Love to know more”.

Jaggy: “An AED is in fact very simple to use. All one needs to do is just switch it on. Once switched on the AED by using voice prompts guides the first aider on how to use it”.

Maggie: “Sounds nice but can you be more specific on how to operate it”?

Jaggy: “Imagine some one suffered a Cardiac Arrest and is not responding. You need to ask someone nearby to call the Ambulance and get the AED. As the victim is not breathing you have started CPR. Once the AED arrives and switched on, it will prompt the user to Attach Pads to Patient’s Chest. Pictures on the pads will show you where exactly to attach it.

Once the pads are attached the AED will prompt Analysing Heart Rhythm. Do not touch the patient. CPR is stopped while the AED analyses. After a few seconds comes the instruction Shock Advised, Charging, Stay clear. The machine then delivers the shock. The patient will jerk a little which is normal. The AED then says it is safe to touch the patient. Begin CPR now. You perform CPR till the AED prompts you to stop and it reanalyses. Thus, with a combination of CPR and shock from the AED, lives can be saved during Cardiac Arrests”.

Maggie: “How soon we need to use an AED after a Cardiac Arrest”?

Jaggy: “Within the first 5 minutes. The sooner the better. If delayed the chances are going to be slim”.

Maggie: “It is indeed a life saving machine. Where all can we have an AED”?

Jaggy: “An AED can be placed anywhere. Usually, the ambulances are equipped with Defibrillators. In many countries they are available in Airports, Railway stations, Bus stations, places of work, and even schools. I mean they can be everywhere”.

Maggie: “Now that you have mentioned Schools, do we use different pads for children or infants”?

Jaggy: “Yes. The pads used are different, but if they are not available adult pads can be used. Children and infants rarely suffer Cardiac arrests”.

Maggie: “Nice Jaggy. Do we need to be trained to use it”?

Jaggy: “A first aider needs to be trained on how to use it. Most of the manufactures and sellers of AED arrange a training on how to use one. All one needs to do is attend. Even if not trained they can call the Emergency services who can guide them on how to use the same”.

Maggie: “Thank you so much. I’ll watch videos and attend a training for sure”.

How to use AED

Jaggy: “To sum up I would say this”.

CPR = Human effort
AED = technology
Human Effort + Technology = Miracles

Thanks for Reading and Sharing.

Loving you all so much.
