MY INDIA SAFE INDIA —POSH.

Hello all my readers! Trust everyone is doing great and are on Top of the World. I too, am good and doing well. Maggie and Jaggy have been away for some time and as requested by my readers privately, they are back with a totally new conversation. This time they will talk on POSH-‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment’. Safety is for everyone which includes the women folk at the workplace. Maggie will lead the conversation here and Jaggy would be the one asking questions. Let us listen in to what they have to say. I trust that this blog will help people to understand better, the subject of POSH. This will be the first conversation in a series of conversations.

Maggie: “Hello Jaggy! Trust you are on top of the world as usual.”

Jaggy: “Yes Maggie you are right.”

Maggie: “Nice to meet you after a long time.”

Jaggy: “Yes Maggie both of us were busy in our own ways.”

Maggie: “Jaggy I had attended a session on POSH Train the Trainers workshop recently conducted at my workplace.”

Jaggy: “That’s awesome. Now you will train people on POSH.

Maggie: “Yes Jaggy.”

Jaggy: “I have been a Safety Trainer for long but really do not know much about POSH. Would like to know more from you.”

Maggie: “Sure Jaggy.”

Jaggy: “What exactly is this POSH and when was it introduced in India?”

Maggie: “Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace is called POSH in Short P- Prevention O –Of S-Sexual H-Harassment. How it started and why is a long story which I will tell you on another day. The law in India is POSH 2013 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.”

Jaggy: “Great Maggie. Never knew it. Go ahead and educate me.”

Maggie: “Before we get into POSH, I want your answer to what is your understanding of the two words, Sex and Gender?”

Jaggy: “I think both are the same to a large extent. We say either Male or Female sex or gender. Am I correct?”

Maggie: “No Jaggy they do not mean the same. Sex is basically the biological make up of a person. Gender is more of behavioural traits or the roles imposed upon by the society. We say Sex is either male or female but we say masculine or feminine gender.”

Jaggy: “Oh I see! But is there not a third gender?”

Maggie: “The third gender or trans- genders as they are called basically are either male, or female.”

Jaggy: “Interesting but what has this to do with POSH?”

Maggie: “Patience Jaggy you need to understand something else before I get to POSH.”

Jaggy: “Go ahead.”

Maggie: “First and Foremost you need to understand 3 key words, Gender Sensitivity, Gender Sensitization and Gender Equality.”

Jaggy: “Well to me I feel that gender sensitivity is understanding the needs of the gender, gender sensitisation is creating awareness and gender equality is no discrimination.”

Maggie: “Good try Jaggy but let me clarify. Gender sensitivity is being aware of the differences in the gender, gender sensitization is being aware of the feelings and emotions and gender equality is no discrimination which you rightly said.”

Jaggy: “Good explanation Maggie but when and why this gender theory actually start and why differences in roles?”

Maggie: “A long time ago both were considered equal but slowly both men and women realized that due to their respective biological process they cannot perform all the roles and hence the early society of humans decided that a male should do this and a female should do this. But there are instances even in mythologies of different civilizations where both men and women fought in wars.”

Jaggy: “Then probably over a period of time discrimination started that men are stronger than women and women need the protection of men is it not?”

Maggie: “Yes Jaggy but these days, women are also competing with men in all walks of life. Inequality gets learnt, Equality needs teaching. That is why I wanted to be clear on gender sensitivity, sensitization and equality.”

Jaggy: “Thanks Maggie. Looking forward to more such conversations on POSH with you. Keep teaching me.”

Maggie: “Always welcome.”

I had recently undergone a ‘train the trainer workshop on POSH’ and I decided that the world and especially my country men and women should know about it and hence this series.  I take this opportunity to thank Dr. Darshana Vithalani for her inputs and my POSH trainer Mrs. Vandana Chawla for her teaching. Please read, share the blog to all and do not forget to post your suggestions and corrections in the comments section.

Stay safe and be safe.

AN ODE TO TEACHERS.

Hello dear readers! Trust all of you are safe and going about life in your own great ways. Life is Beautiful and let us all enjoy it always.

Maggie has gone on a trekking expedition as she had told Jaggy. They will not be having a conversation this time around and they will be back for the next. In this blog I have decided to write about teachers as we all are nothing and would not have been whatever we are without them.

5th of September every year is celebrated as Teachers Day in India. On this day in 1888 a gentleman by name Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in Tiruttani a part of the Madras state as it was called. This humble man rose from being a teacher to being the First Vice President of independent India and then went on to be the 2nd President of the country.  He was extremely popular as a teacher wherever he had taught. When he took the oath of office and secrecy his students approached him and wanted his birthday to be celebrated as a special day to which the great man replied let it be celebrated as Teachers Day in India. Such was the humility of this man who was awarded the highest civilian honour of India the BHARAT RATNA in 1954.

He said, “The true teachers are those who help us think for ourselves.” Nothing describes this more aptly than the story narrated below.

There was once a King who asked his council of ministers as to what is the profession which has made the kingdom what it is today?

Minister 1: “Dear King the Engineers are the ones who have made the kingdom what it is today as they have built the infrastructure without which there is nothing.”

King: “Then get the best engineer and let us reward him.”

Minister 2: “No my dear King it the Soldiers who protect the kingdom, otherwise we all would have been slaves.”

King: “Let us reward the best soldier too.”

Minister 3: “I feel it is the Doctors my dear king without whom all of us would have died of the various ailments that we have. It is due to them the wellness of the kingdom is Excellent.”

King: “Then let us reward the best Doctor.”

Minister 4: “Dear King Infrastructure, Army, Health care all require money to operate, and it is the business community that makes it happen.”

King: “Let us reward the best businessman also.”

Soon the court of the king was filled with the best people from many professions and the dilemma faced by the king was whom to reward?

He turned to the Prime Minister and looked at him quizzically.

Prime Minister: “I knew it my dear King that when you are confused you will come to me. Please wait for some time.”

The Prime Minister went out and came back after a while. The tension in the court of the king was palpable till the Prime Minister returned. He came and along with came a frail old lady. Seeing the old lady all the best professionals who had gathered stood up with folded hands. The courtiers and ministers and in fact everyone in the court stood up. The King who was sitting all the while too stood up ignoring the fact that he as a king need not stand.

King: “Pray tell me dear prime minister who is this old lady and on seeing her everyone has stood up?”

Prime Minister: “She is the teacher who has taught most of the people in this court your Majesty and on seeing her the students naturally stood up.”

The story conveys the fact that Teaching teaches all professions. No matter what we are, who we are we all have been created by teachers. Even the teachers who taught us had their teachers. On this Teachers Day, I salute all the teachers who have graced my life. My parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, teachers, in school and college, my friends in my personal and professional life, my mentors and Gurus without whom I just don’t exist. Thank you for making me what I am today.

GURUR BRAMHA GURUR VISHNU GURUR DEVO MAHESHWARA

GURUR SAAKSHAT PARAMBRAMHA TASMAI SREE GURAVE NAMAH.

The words above in the divine language Sanskrit mean that the teachers are absolute and salutation to them. Just as a potter creates a pot out of mud, a sculptor creates a statue, a jeweller identifies a diamond from a rock it is the Teachers who help us discover ourselves.

Proud to have become a Teacher and Trainer in Emergency Response and, Human resource development. We are all teachers in a way. Let us learn and teach for ever as without teachers even teachers would not have been there.

LIVE LIFE SAVE LIFE – CHOKING

Thank you so much for the adulation and appreciation for the last 2 blogs on the series Live Life Save Life.  I trust you have shared your learning with all your near and dear ones. When blogs are written on Life saving skills it creates a better society and enhances service to humanity. While going through the various comments received one reader, who himself is a published author suggested that I tell the world who Jaggy and Maggie are and a sketch of the characters.

The character Jaggy is the person because of him all this has been made possible. He was the one who gave me the opportunity to become a Trainer in Emergency Response and one who has always been my inspiration. He is none other than Mr. Jagadish Adapa Managing Director of Usha Fire Safety Equipments Pvt Ltd Chennai. His animated character is called Jaggy.

Maggie is just a name which rhymes with Jaggy as suggested by some of my family members and friends. Images of Jaggy and Maggie in the next edition.

In this blog Maggie and Jaggy are back discussing another important life saving skill.

Jaggy: “Hello Maggie! Good to see again. “

Maggie: “Yes Jaggy, good to see you too.”

Maggie: ‘Recently I read in the newspaper that a person died while eating a cake after celebrating his birthday.” “Shocking to know one can die while eating.”

Jaggy: “I read that article too.” “This is not the first time this is happening, there have been lot of cases like that.”

Maggie: “Oh my God! Can you elaborate on it and what to do when it happens?”

Jaggy: “This is a phenomenon known as Choking.” “This happens when any obstruction happens to your trachea aka air pipe.” “Due to the obstruction air cannot pass and one cannot breathe.”

Maggie: “When does this usually happen and how?”

Jaggy: “Many a time this happens when you are distracted while eating food. The mechanism is very simple. We have 2 pipes which start from the nose and mouth. They are called Trachea and Oesophagus aka air pipe and food pipe. Both are joined together initially and separated to do their respective work.”

Maggie: “Now I remember. My science teacher in school had taught me this. There is also an Epiglottis in between which ensures air and food reach their correct destinations lungs and stomach.”

Jaggy: “That is exactly right. Choking happens when the Epiglottis is not sure what to do and hence food enters the trachea.”

Airway

Maggie: “What are the signs and indication when someone is choking?”

Jaggy: “When someone chokes, he is not able to talk. He will be trying to cough but no sound comes out. They will cross their hands try to hold the throat which is the classic sign of choking.”

Maggie: “Ok. So, what do we do when it happens?”

Jaggy: “The First aid is very simple. There are 2 ways in which this can be done. 1. Back Slaps and 2. Abdominal Thrusts.”

Maggie: “Oh! I see. Can you explain it.”

Jaggy: “The back slaps are easy to perform. First bend the victim down. Using the palm and the heel of the hand thrust hard and fast between the two shoulder blades for 5 times. Repeat the procedure if necessary. Back slaps work if the choking is not severe.”

Maggie: “But if the choking is severe?”

Jaggy: “If the choking is severe, we perform the abdominal thrust. Get behind the person and make your hand into a fist. Encircle the person using both hands and keep the fist above the navel. Thrust inside and the same time try to lift the person up. Do it for 5 times and repeat as long as you can. The abdominal thrusts are called Heimlich Manoeuvre.”

Maggie: “What if the person is heavy and has a belly or may be a pregnant woman? Is it Ok to perform abdominal thrust?”

Jaggy: “Good question Maggy. When the hands cannot encircle the navel area then push the hands closer to the chest and perform the thrusts. The procedure is same for adults and children.”

Heimlich Maneuver

Maggie: “More than adults and children it is infants that usually choke. In such cases what we should do?”

Jaggy: “For infants the method is different. Make sure the infant is in prone position on your thigh. Now give back slaps between the shoulder blades and repeat. If the choking is severe turn the infant on its back use 2 fingers and perform Chest thrusts.”

Maggie: “Superb Jaggy. Thank you so much for your clear communication. This knowledge really helps.”

Jaggy: “Yes. More than the first aid required for choking we should be careful while eating and when infants are around ensure that there are no little things which they can pop up in the mouth.”

Maggie: “What if the person is alone and no one to help him?”

Jaggy: “Good question! In such cases just get a chair and press your abdomen to it as hard as you can. This will solve the problem.

Maggie: “Thanks, Jaggy. Stay Safe and Be Safe.”

Jaggy: “Sure Maggie. Will stay safe and be safe.”

Jaggy and Maggie will be back with more for sure.

Automated External Defibrillator

LIVE LIFE SAVE LIFE – AED

Thanks to all the readers who have appreciated my last blog, Live Life Save Life where the characters Maggie and Jaggy discussed what to do in a Cardiac Arrest. The feed back received has only spurred me to continue to write better as it has increased the expectations of the readers. In this blog too Maggie and Jaggy will discuss more on Saving lives. Let us follow the conversation.

Maggie: “Hello Jaggy. You are looking great and in good health”.

Jaggy: “Yes, Maggie all is well with me looking forward to live life save life”.

Maggie: “Thank you for the conversation where you had explained the difference between Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest and the first aid to be done”.

Jaggy: “Teaching skills that saves life is always a pleasure”.

Maggie: “Last time you had explained 2 steps of the Chain of Survival and particularly CPR. Can you explain more on the 3rd step the defibrillation”?

Jaggy: “Sure Maggie. In CPR by we are only circulating oxygenated blood to the brain and thereby we can save life, but every time CPR alone cannot do the job. The heart is to be jolted with a bit of electric current to get back to its normal rhythm”.

Maggie: “You mean we need to give an Electric shock? Can a first aider do that”!

Jaggy: “This is not something new Maggie. This technique has been around for a long time. Doctors and health care workers use it every day to save lives”.

Maggie: “Doctors always save lives, but can you explain more clearly”?

Jaggy: “In many a movie we have seen doctors performing a surgery on someone. Suddenly you see the monitor go erratic and the doctor shouts Cardiac Arrest!!! Immediately the doctor is handed over two small square shaped boxes to which gel is applied and the doctor uses them on the chest of the patient. Miraculously the person is revived”.

Maggie: “I have seen that, but movies are movies. Never real”.

Jaggy: “I know but not everything in a movie is fantasy. The doctor in the movie uses a device called a Defibrillator.  Defibrillator is a device which jolts the heart into a normal rhythm. The doctors use a Manual Defibrillator wherein they decide the amount of shock to be given. First aider is not a doctor. So, they use an AED. Automated External Defibrillator”.

Maggie: “Wow! Interesting. Love to know more”.

Jaggy: “An AED is in fact very simple to use. All one needs to do is just switch it on. Once switched on the AED by using voice prompts guides the first aider on how to use it”.

Maggie: “Sounds nice but can you be more specific on how to operate it”?

Jaggy: “Imagine some one suffered a Cardiac Arrest and is not responding. You need to ask someone nearby to call the Ambulance and get the AED. As the victim is not breathing you have started CPR. Once the AED arrives and switched on, it will prompt the user to Attach Pads to Patient’s Chest. Pictures on the pads will show you where exactly to attach it.

Once the pads are attached the AED will prompt Analysing Heart Rhythm. Do not touch the patient. CPR is stopped while the AED analyses. After a few seconds comes the instruction Shock Advised, Charging, Stay clear. The machine then delivers the shock. The patient will jerk a little which is normal. The AED then says it is safe to touch the patient. Begin CPR now. You perform CPR till the AED prompts you to stop and it reanalyses. Thus, with a combination of CPR and shock from the AED, lives can be saved during Cardiac Arrests”.

Maggie: “How soon we need to use an AED after a Cardiac Arrest”?

Jaggy: “Within the first 5 minutes. The sooner the better. If delayed the chances are going to be slim”.

Maggie: “It is indeed a life saving machine. Where all can we have an AED”?

Jaggy: “An AED can be placed anywhere. Usually, the ambulances are equipped with Defibrillators. In many countries they are available in Airports, Railway stations, Bus stations, places of work, and even schools. I mean they can be everywhere”.

Maggie: “Now that you have mentioned Schools, do we use different pads for children or infants”?

Jaggy: “Yes. The pads used are different, but if they are not available adult pads can be used. Children and infants rarely suffer Cardiac arrests”.

Maggie: “Nice Jaggy. Do we need to be trained to use it”?

Jaggy: “A first aider needs to be trained on how to use it. Most of the manufactures and sellers of AED arrange a training on how to use one. All one needs to do is attend. Even if not trained they can call the Emergency services who can guide them on how to use the same”.

Maggie: “Thank you so much. I’ll watch videos and attend a training for sure”.

How to use AED

Jaggy: “To sum up I would say this”.

CPR = Human effort
AED = technology
Human Effort + Technology = Miracles

More from Jaggy and Maggie in my next blog.

Thanks for Reading and Sharing.

Loving you all so much.

Innovate or Evaporate – II

Hello readers! Trust everyone is safe and staying safe. Safety today has assumed utmost importance as we are all going through a time which has been the toughest one in the century. The month of August was pretty tough for me personally, however the period taught me a lot of things which will help me a lot in life. This blog will be a continuation of the last blog where we had discussed innovative lifesaving products, patented and produced in India by Jayasheel Adapa. In fact, he has patented a total of 17 products of which I have written only about four of them. In this blog, we shall discuss three more products.

Mr.Jayasheel Adapa

The last blog ended with the product called Escape Smoke Hood and the one which we will discuss is an extension of the same. It is known as Emergency Escape Breathing Device or in short EEBD. In some factories and industrial establishments, it is not easy to evacuate immediately whenever an alarm is raised. Some processes have to be shut down properly before the employee can move out of the area. The inherent dangers in such situations are Smoke and Heat. The oxygen levels too go down and the smoke hood even if available will not be sufficient in such a situation. The EEBD consists of a cylinder filled with air and is connected to a Hood with a visor. The Hood is aluminized and as such can withstand heat. All this is placed in a bag which one needs to hang over his shoulder. To wear it one needs to open the bag, place the hood over his face and pull a pin in the cylinder to start the flow of air. The air in the cylinder can be used for 15 to 20 minutes thereby helping the person to breathe easy and come out. This facilitates easy evacuation and this is not a rescue device. Though popular in marine and shipping industry by the name ELSA (Emergency Life Saving Apparatus) it is not much known elsewhere and this is where Mr. Jayasheel stepped in by making and patenting it so that anyone in a process can easily use it.

EEBD

I was always fascinated by an old story written by Leo Tolstoy named “A SPARK NEGLECTED BURNS THE HOUSE”. Though the story talks about broken friendship this maxim is true in case of Fire. Most fire accidents that have been caused during the pandemic time can be attributed to Electrical malfunctions. Though we install fire extinguishers and smoke detectors near electrical panels, by the time anyone comes and uses it may be too late. There are a lot of micro environments and unmanned areas which are highly vulnerable to such electrical sparks. To take care and suppress the fire right at the Incipient stage a product called Fire Sniper was patented by Jayasheel. This is a micro fire suppression system which simply extinguishes the fire within 10 seconds of inception. The Sniper has a cylinder filled with the extinguishing media and has actuation and solenoid valves. To the valves is connected a pressurized polymer heat sensing tube which can be routed through the area that needs protection. If there is a fire and the flame touches the tube, it punctures and discharges the media right at the heart of the fire like a surgical strike thereby the fire is put out immediately and it will not go to the next stage. This product has not only been patented but has been approved by LPCB (LOSS PREVENTION CERTIFICATION BOARD UK). This certifies that this product is manufactured stringently and qualitatively to the highest standards. The snipers are available in various capacities. The extinguishing media used is either Mono Ammonium Phosphate Dry Chemical Powder, or Clean Agent gas.

Fire Sniper

Due to globalisation, many corporate and industrial houses have kitchens in their premises, as a lot of people have to be fed. The food courts in IT companies occupy huge space and the entire cuisine of the world is made available, and as such the kitchens have a lot of equipment and are big. Fire hazard is quite prominent and all these kitchens have Hoods which can be the cause and spread of fire. Heated fatty oils too are dangerous and are difficult to put out. Here is where the mind of Jayasheel worked overtime, to create a version of the Kitchen Sniper. This is similar in design to the normal fire sniper, with the only differences being the colour and extinguishing agent. The extinguishing agent here is the Wet Chemical specific for fatty oils and kitchen fires.

The innovations in such products have reminded me of the verse of an old Hindi song

Suraj Dekh Rukh Gaya Hai,

Tere Aage Jhukh Gaya Hai,

Jab Kabhi Aise Koyi  Mastaana,

Nikhle Apni Dhun Mein Deewana,

Shaam Suhaani Ban Jaate Hain Din Intezar Ke,

Oh rahi Oh rahi,

Ruk Jaana Nahin Tu Kahin Haar ke.

God Bless You Mr. Jayasheel Adapa. May you create many more innovation in Life Safety.

In my next blog we shall be creating a complete fire fighter. Till then Stay safe and be safe.

Innovate or Evaporate

Wish all my fellow Indians a HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY. It is exactly on this day 74 years ago India became free from the British rule. We have progressed quite a lot and still a lot remains to be done. We all need to proactively work towards making the country safe, and by doing that we build a stronger and a healthy country. Let us on this day Pledge to be SAFE and cut down life loss in Emergency situations.

The world is going through a tough pandemic time and everyone of us has been affected. But this pandemic has forced us to think better and improve ourselves. We are doing many things which we had never done before. During an online interview of mine a question was asked what is new in the field of Safety and are there any one innovating in the field of safety? This blog is dedicated to one such man, who not only dared to innovate, but even put up a manufacturing unit for the products he innovated upon.

Mr. Jayasheel Adapa, is the founder director of Usha Fire Safety Equipments Pvt Ltd, Managing Director of Usha Armour Pvt Ltd and Managing Director of Resguardo Industries Pvt. Ltd. An Engineer by profession, an innovator at heart, and a business man with a noble cause, he is instrumental today in patenting and marketing Innovative Rescue Products in India. A passionate trainer, who believes that a trainer should not only train, but identify and eliminate gaps in safety and rescue. This part of him has led to many innovations in manufacturing and marketing rescue products. His innovations are many and hence this blog will be in 2 parts.

As a trainer while conducting Evacuation drills or Fire drills in high rises, one of the major factors is about evacuating people with special challenges like mobility impairments or expectant mothers. During a drill they are exempted from participation, or they are evacuated in advance. However, in real time what do they do and where do they go and how they will be rescued? In advanced countries an Evacuation Rescue Chair is used for the same. They are made available in all the floors over there and the ERT (EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM) use it to save lives. A thought occurred to Jayasheel why not we make the same in India. He not only started manufacturing them, but even patented the product, something which not many do in India. This chair basically moves like a wheel chair on the floor and can glide on the stairwell to evacuate people with mobility impairments.

A separate model of the chair was designed for hospital use also where one can easily hang the intravenous tubes and keep all the relevant documents of the patient in a pouch. This helps in evacuating a patient from a hospital despite all the challenges.

We all are familiar with a wheel chair but how many of us are familiar with a liftable wheel chair? This Innovative chair is not only a wheel chair but it can also be lifted. The Liftable wheel chair was designed by him to evacuate people trapped in basements, and where there are no ramps it is difficult to bring up injured people. This equipment helps rescuers to easily and quickly rescue persons from basements. This product too is patented and manufactured by him.

One of the most important elements of rescue or medical evacuation is to carry patients in a stretcher. Most stretchers do not fit into elevators and the staircase is the only option. When the victim is carried in usually his legs protrude out, and if oxygen has to be administered it is even more difficult. Two problems which did not really have a solution till Jayasheel thought of it and designed a stretcher, with a Foot pouch to lock the feet, and a pouch for a portable oxygen cylinder. Now rescue and medical evacuation have become easier. It requires a high level of thinking to understand the problem, and to arrive at this kind of innovative solutions.

For the ERT team doing the evacuation one situation they always have to encounter during a fire is deadly smoke. We have discussed about smoke in the earlier blogs, and we know exactly what to do. But for the last person coming out, the density of smoke could increase and the life can be in danger, and here is where the Escape Smoke Hood comes into play. It is made of fire-retardant fabric and has a cartridge with chemicals, that can filter deadly gases like Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Cyanide, Acrolein to name a few for a period of 15 minutes. This enables the last person whether an ERT, production manager in a factory, a doctor in an OT, and even a resident coming out of his home to be protected from Smoke.

When all these products were imported, one man dared to produce all these in his factory in India. All the products are registered with the Controller General of Patents and Trademarks, Government of India and other International approvals like LPCB.  This to me signifies Aatmnirbhar Bharat, the clarion call of the Prime Minister of India. More such products and innovations from Mr.Jayasheel in my next blog.

Till then stay safe and be safe.

THE FIRE CALLED LIFE IS PRECIOUS.

It has been a while since my last blog. The Month of May was good despite the ongoing crisis. From physical live training, I was delivering training sessions online. As I sat down to write, my mobile buzzed and there was the breaking news of a famous young actor taking his own life. That set me thinking on what to write. This actor had everything going for him, fame, money, success and adulation. Not only being a good actor he was a good human who donated large amounts of money to charity and his death at his own hands shocked me. I began to wonder why one takes his own life. What made him to do it?

Now if you are all wondering is this going to be a motivational piece of writing. It certainly is not but I have decided to narrate the story of my friend who could have resorted to taking his life but did not. He too had everything going good for him in life. He had a good job, a beautiful family of his wife and son and was living a life of good quality. His job of being an Engineer onboard, a ship that took him all around the world and what not. In the year 2001, he was sailing along with his family and was incredibly happy as he was to sign off from the ship and head home as soon as the ship reaches Durban, South Africa the next day.
But life has its own twists and turns, fate has its own agenda and as the ship was cruising on the highseas, a big loud sound shattered it all. There was a huge explosion in the engine room of the ship and soon the entire ship’s engine room was on fire. He was caught bang in the middle of it all and before he could realize what was happening, all hell broke loose. He bore the brunt of it as he was very near to the explosion. Thank God as sailors were well trained in Emergency situations and large ships are equipped with the best firefighting systems, he was saved and his fellow sailors got him out of the inferno.

He suffered burns all over his upperbody and his life was in grave danger. The pain was unimaginable and the suffering was something only that person can understand. From the ship, he was shifted to a Hospital in Durban, South Africa, after 3 days for treatment. He was there in the hospital for almost 6 months. Then he was shifted to Nellore, Andhra Pradesh his hometown in India where he continued to be in hospital. He fought on every day not knowing whether he would be alive to see the next day. If not the pain, the trauma of it all, the recurring nightmares could have killed him. His relatives had given up hope of his survival and even instructed his wife to forget and move ahead in life. Indian Women are sentimental, emotional and very spiritual in nature. She had unflinching faith in God and that he would make it back. She nursed him, cared for him, prayed for him and motivated him to survive the most testing time of his life.

It is said when prayers go up, blessings descend and it was the prayers of whomsoever concerned about him through which the miracle of saving him was possible. He came out of the hospital and started his own business and today with two of my school mates, he has started an International School in Hyderabad providing a Comprehensive Education. He makes sure that every year there is a fire fighting training done at the school and all the teachers, support staff and students are trained on it. The scars are still there which serve as a grim reminder of the nightmare but they also tell a story of a man who never gave up.
PROUD OF YOU MY FRIEND and want you keep inspiring all of us. I never knew all this as we had lost contact for many years till we all met back in 2011. When he told me about this incident, I just could not believe it. He could have taken his life unable to bear the suffering but he did not. Not only him, there are countless people who suffer in Fire accidents and hence the responsibility is on all of us to keep our Homes and work places or any place for that matter Fire-Safe. The scars o the burns heal over time but the mental scars remain for a long time.

Fire safety is Everyone’s job and it does not have a holiday. The fire of life is too precious to be snuffed out.
Till my next blog, stay safe and be safe.

MOIEZ AHAMED THE LEGENDARY FIRE SAFETY EDUCATOR

Moeiz Ahamed

There are many people in the world who do great things but some take it to a level that is never imagined. That is why they are called Legends and one of the Legends in Fire Safety Educators in India is Mr. MOIEZ AHMED. When I joined Usha Fire Safety in the year 2007, my Mentor Jagadish Adapa, a Legend himself, used to tell me to watch Moiez Ahmed in action and then you will understand what fire safety training is. I can still remember the day I met him in Hyderabad at a Fire Drill in an IT Company. Thousands of occupants had gathered in the fire drill and this man mesmerised them with his powerful oration. I was simply overwhelmed and became a very big fan of him.

I learnt the true meaning of passion by watching him. He is an individual who has dedicated himself to the cause of fire safety education and on a mission to make India Fire-Safe. First let me present his credentials before telling you more about him.

He holds a Diploma In fire engineering from National Fire Service College in Nagpur the only institution that offers Degrees and Diploma in Fire Engineering. After completing his diploma, he joined the Karnataka State Fire Services in 1971 and served for 29 long years till he took retirement voluntarily. He held many responsible positions and the prominent among them are :

Deputy Assistant Director of National Fire Service College.

Senior Instructor as Divisional Fire officer in R. A Fire Service College Bangalore.

Served as an N.C.C Instructor in the Indian Army and Instructor for the Karnataka State Home Guards for Civil Defence.

He has received the President’s medal for meritorious service in 1989 and 1998 and the Karnataka Chief Minister Medal in 1992.

In recognition of his services, the Karnataka state has made him the Chief Fire Warden of the Fire Services and he still serves in that capacity.

Though he has impressive credentials as a Fireman, his heart was always into educating people. There is no Fireman in India during his tenure in the fire services who is not trained by him. His passion found a calling after he retired and joined Usha Armour Private Ltd in Bangalore. Together with Mr. Jagdish and Jaysheel Adapa, the trio created a revolution in Fire Safety Training. Till date, he would have done 10000+ training sessions and still continues to do so. If at all I have been able to write it, it is because of them.

I always found it great to be in his company though they were very few. But just being with him gave you tremendous insights into the man who was so passionate about his work. I had gone to watch his training session in Bangalore and was sitting a little away from the crowd when he roared saying TOO FAR. He made me come forward and sit in front of him. After that, He told me that I had a lot to learn. After the session, he took me to the Brigade Road Fire Station and introduced me to Firemen who saved lives in a fire accident at Carlton Towers in Bangalore. Those moments spent with him are truly amazing for someone like me and shall always be in debt to that man. He used to have a lot of one liners for educators and few are reproduced as under.

People learn from cradle to grave, how they learn changes throughout the life.

Learn not to burn.

Effective fire and life safety educators are effective communicators.

It is not enough to tell people how to operate a fire extinguisher but tell them how to operate safely.

Open flame and naked light, in causing fire they find delight.

Faulty lines you often find, electric spark is seldom kind, better call a wireman bright for he will set it right.

There are many more like him who are unsung heroes and who do their job with passion, energy and selfless service. Leaders in the true sense who have inspired many a person like me. If at all Fire Drills and the post occupancy briefing are popular, it is because of people like Moiez Ahmed.

LONG LIVE THE MASTER OF THE FIRE DRILL, MR. MOIEZ AHMED.

See you all in my next blog till then, stay safe and be safe.

History of Fire Service Day – India

Dear readers,

I know that every one of us is fighting the biggest crisis of mankind, the COVID 19 or the CORONA virus. All of us, wherever we are across the world, are in various stages of lock down and venturing out only to buy essential things for survival. We are fighting this battle by staying at Home but there are countless others who are fighting this war from the front, and are working round the clock to save us. They deserve gratitude and praise of the highest order from all of us.

If you are wondering is this a blog on Corona Virus, you are mistaken. This blog is a tribute to every FIREMAN who is fighting the battle of Corona along with everyone else. My tribute to them is to tell you all the History of Fire Service day in India

HISTORY OF FIRE SERVICE DAY —– INDIA.

The 14th of April every year in India is celebrated as Fire Service day. When I tell the date to most people they immediately ask me what is so special about that day? What was the achievement of the firemen on that particular day? The day was one of the saddest events in the history of fire fighting. 66 firemen sacrificed their lives while fighting a fire and thus, the government of India has decided to call this year’s fire service day as MARTYRS DAY.

It was the year 1944 which was world war time. A ship by name S.SFORTSTIKINE belonging to the British Ministry of War and transport was docked in Mumbai city then known as Bombay. It contained 1395 tons of explosives, arms and ammunition.Under normal circumstances, the ship is not allowed to dock in the port but   the ship had a certificate Of Grave Urgency, hence it was allowed to dock. On 14TH April around 2.00pm in the afternoon, smoke was noticed and the fire service was informed. They rushed to the spot to fight the fire but no one was aware what lay in store for them. Initially, they thought the fire was under control but it was not and more reinforcements were called and they too arrived. At 4.05pm there was a tremendous explosion in the ship and then all hell broke loose. All the nearby ships which were docked too were destroyed. The second explosion which occurred at 4.36pm shook the ship and went up 3000 feet high. The dock was on Fire for a few kilometres and the explosion was heard in many places.

336 people burned and 66 Firemen died. The number of injured was immense and even today there is no clear data of the number of deaths in this tragedy. Many Fire fighters were disabled and some of them lived to tell the tale to future generations. One such fire fighter was Mr. Meharvanjee who was 19 years old at that time. He recounted the tragedy many years later in an interview to a television channel.

Though late in the year 1968, the Government of India declared APRIL 14TH as FIRE SERVICE DAY and the entire week is declared as Fire Service week. Let us all remember this date in the honour of all firemen who risk their lives to save ours. They are the unsung heroes of the society. I salute all the Firemen for their selfless service. Many today are joining the police or Armed forces but none prefers the fire services.

Continuing the tribute to the fire fighters I shall be writing about one of the legendary fire service personalities in my next blog. Until then, stay Home, stay Safe, in the fight against COVID-19.

HISTORY OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

It’s been quite a while since I have posted a blog. A combination of factors such as a busy training schedule and health issues had taken over most of my time and hence the delay. However, as soon as the month of March comes to an end, I will be able to spare more time to write. Apologies to all my readers for the delay!

So far in all my blogs I have covered a lot of things on the Basics of Fire Safety. In my last blog, we have seen the media used for firefighting and I hope it was very useful to the readers. In this blog, let us go through the history of fire extinguishers. Though one may not need the knowledge of who patented or created the first extinguisher, it is always good to know the same.

The first fire extinguisher of which there is any record was patented in England in 1723 by Ambrose Godfrey, a celebrated chemist of that time. It consisted of a cask of fire-extinguishing liquid containing a pewter chamber of gunpowder. This was connected with a system of fuses which were ignited, exploding the gunpowder and scattering the solution. This device was probably used to a limited extent, as Bradley’s Weekly Messenger for November 7, 1729, refers to its efficiency in stopping a fire in London.

The modern-day dry powder fire extinguisher was invented by British Captain George William Manby in 1818; it consisted of a copper vessel of 3 gallons (13.6 litres) of pearl ash (potassium carbonate) solution contained within compressed air.

Pictures of some of the early extinguishers are as under.

The soda-acid extinguisher was first patented in 1866 by Francois Carlier of France, which mixed a solution of water and sodium bicarbonate with tartaric acid, producing the propellant CO2 gas. A soda-acid extinguisher was patented in the U.S. in 1881 by Almon M.Granger. His extinguisher used the reaction between sodium bicarbonate solution and sulphuric acid to expel pressurized water onto a fire. A vial of concentrated sulphuric acid was suspended in the cylinder. Depending on the type of extinguisher, the vial of acid could be broken in one or two ways. One used a plunger to break the acid vial, while the second released a lead stopple that held the vial closed. Once the acid was mixed with the bicarbonate solution, carbon dioxide gas was expelled and thereby pressurized the water. The pressurized water was forced from the canister through a nozzle. This type of extinguisher was used for a very long time in India till new types were manufactured and adopted.

After the Soda Acid type came in the form of chemical and Mechanical foam-type extinguishers for use on Liquid fires. These type were normally cartridge-type extinguishers and were in vogue for a long time and in some places are still used though the governments have banned them from manufacture. Then came dry chemical powder type, with sodium bi carbonate as the main extinguishing agent. Today it is Mono Ammonium phosphate.

The carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguisher was invented  by the Walter Kidde Company in 1924 in response to Bell Telephone’s request for an electrically non-conductive chemical for extinguishing the previously difficult-to-extinguish fires in telephone switchboards.CO2 is still popular today as it is an ozone-friendly clean agent though it is a green-house gas. Carbon dioxide extinguishes fire mainly by displacing oxygen. It was once thought that it worked by cooling, although this effect on most fires is negligible. There were extinguishers with Carbon Tetra Chloride and Halon as extinguishing media which were later phased out due to various factors. Today they are replaced with environmentally friendly Clean Agent Gases.

Many of the early types of extinguishers were not easy to operate unless one was perfectly trained and sometimes if the fire extinguishers were not maintained properly they even exploded causing injury and sometimes death.
Below are some pictures of the extinguisher, including the ones used today.

I hope you would find the History interesting and I shall give you a lot more information on the types of extinguishers in my next blog.

Till then stay safe and be Happy!
